Weekend Round up 9th/10th February

Scott Lincoln won his 8th British title and 4th indoors at the British Indoors Championships. Scott again dominated the event with a winning throw of 19.06m with all six of his throws being more than a metre ahead of the second placed competitior. Lucy Hadaway continued her impressive progress by finishing 4th in the long jump in a personal best distance of 6.29m just 17 cms behind the winner Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Alex Botterill came 2nd in his 800m heat with a time of 1.51.10 but this was not fast enough to finish as of the two fastest loosers across the four heats so he didn’t make the final.

20 juniors and 7 seniors ran in the PECO cross country on an excellent course at Roundhay Park. Even the tiny Under 11s were sent to run up Hill 60, a famous hill even for the Seniors in the National Cross Country over the years. But they have been doing their hill training as best we can in York, and took it very well. Their race had 180 runners. Daniel Campbell was 1st Boy, with William Keens 6th and Miles Watson 7th. In the girls, Lucy Gilbertson was 2nd and Annabelle Coxon 13th. In the Under 9 section, Emily Rycroft (who had 2 tough schools races during the week) finished 2nd, Molly Skelton 4th, Nina Hopkins 5th.

The Secondary Age had to tackle the hill twice and had 100 runners. Jack Bratley was 8th. In the girls, Lottie Langan was 3rd, Issie O’Brien 6th, Lucy Gaskin 8th.

The Seniors covered 4.8 miles all over the park, taking in every hill they could find. Emma Ballantyne was 2nd female and Tim Stratton came 3rd overall in a large field of 830 runners.

Several COYAC junior athletes competed in the South Yorkshire County Athletic Association Indoor Series at the EIS in Sheffield throughout the winter months. There are 4 events in the series with scores from the first 3 events counting to a final total. There have now been 3 events with the 4th and final event taking place in March. Athletes must complete a sprint, a longer run, a throw and a jump to be eligible for the final league table. In the U11 boys competition Archie Wright finished first overall with some very good performances in a field of 35 boys.

In the U13 girls’ competition our athletes finished just outside the medals. Esme Pounder finished 4th, Kathryn Clague finished 5th, Emily Maude finished 6th, Ella Wright finished 12th and Nancy Marshall was 15th. 75 girls took part in the competition.

In the U13 boys’ competition Syd Marshall finished in 7th place. 53 boys took part in the competition.

In the U15 girls’ competition Fran Hogg continued her fantastic progress with a third-place finish. Carmen Brooks finished 12th. 87 girls took part.

All of the young athletes performed really well and are a credit to our club.

The club had 11 runners doing parkruns this weekend with Alex Boynton running the fastest time of 18m.27 on the Knavesmire with Joan Brown being fastest female with 24m.36.
