Track and Field
Scott Lincoln achieved the Olympic qualifying standard with a throw of 21.28m in Brno on 13th June. Scott then easily defended his national title by winning by over 3 metres to book his place at the Tokyo Olympics.
Lucy Hadaway won the U23 England Athletics Championships on June 19th with a best jump of 6.53m. Lucy has also achieved the qualifying standard for the U23 European Championships next month. Amy Rolfe also won a bronze medal in this event with 6.09m. Joe O’Brien came 2nd in the U20 3000m at these championships in a time of 8.33.39. Joe followed this up at an invitational race at the British Championships by running 8.28.80.
Eight athletes from the club won medals at the Northern Athletics senior and under 20 track and field championships that were held on the weekend of June 12th/13th.
Gold – Ryan Gorman 100m and 200m, Lucy Hadaway Long Jump and Luke Robinson U20 Javelin
Silver – Charlotte Stamp 400m, Maria Schofield Hammer, Oliver Wright Javelin
Bronze – Robbie Brown 5000m, Amy Rolfe Long Jump
Many of our athletes also won medals at the North Yorkshire Track and Field Championships that were held on June 13th but there are too many to list!
On Saturday and Sunday 26th and 27th June, the ESAA Combined Events regional round was held at the Costello Stadium in Hull with athletes attending from North, South, East and West Yorkshire, Cleveland, Durham and Northumberland. Nine athletes attended from City of York AC with 8 representing North Yorkshire Schools and 1 representing Humberside Schools.
In the Junior Girls competition there were 16 girls taking part. Louisa Birch finished 11th with 3 PB’s on the day and a score of 2180 points; Ella Wright was 9th with 2 PB’s and a total score of 2360 points, Imogen Barrett was 8th with 4 PB’s and a total score of 2365 points; Sophie Robertson-Dover was 7th with 3 PB’s and a score of 2377 points, Grace Green-Hemmings was 6th with 3 PB’s and a score of 2531 points, Kathryn Clague finished in 2nd place with 2 PB’s and an overall score of 2827 points which puts her in 10th place in the UK. Esme Pounder finished in 1st place with 2 PB’s and an overall score of 3057 points which puts her in 6th place in the UK.
The junior girls North Yorkshire squad finished in first place and will represent the County at the National Finals in September.
In the Inter Girls heptathlon competition Frances Hogg produced an excellent performance across 2 days to win the competition comfortably. Fran scored 4678 points and produced 4 PB performances. The Inter girls North Yorkshire squad also finished in first place and will represent the County at the National Finals in September.
In the inter Boys Octathlon competition Isaac Henson finished third with 3828 points and produced 6 PB performances from his 8 events across the 2 days. Once the results from around the Country are published it is hoped that Isaac will compete at the National finals too.
The Senior League team won the 2nd meeting of their league that was held on June 19th in York. The YDL Upper Ager Group team produced another fantastic team performance to win this match comfortably. The club scored 346 points on the day with their nearest rivals (Gateshead Harriers) scoring 236 points. City of York AC continue to sit at the top of the table and look forward to the next match on Sunday 25th July in Hull.
Four of our athletes achieved personal best times in distance races that were held on the track. Robbie Brown broke the long standing 10000m club record that dates back to 1977 as he ran 30.24.70 in Leeds. James Tucker ran 33.34.10 at the same meeting. Angus McMillan ran a PB of 3.46.54 over 1500m with Dan Cheeseman ran 3.49.75 during the month. Gianluca Mastrolonardo ran a PB of 9.10.35 for 3000m.
‘Off track’ Distance Races
12 of our members ran the 5k race at the York University cycle circuit on June 18th. Katy Wood was 2nd female in a time of 17.11 behind Leeds City’s Alice Leeke. Several of our under 15 athletes took part and ran very well in a race which was further than the distances they normally race over on the track or cross country and in a field that mostly comprised of senior runners. Ellie Johnson was second junior in a time of 19.35 with Daniel Kennedy being the first junior boy home from the club in 18.51. The other times from the club were Danny Figg (18.11), Ben Thompson (18.45), Mike Raynes (19.15), Miles Watson (19.17), Ed Dunn (19.54), Katarina Savkovic (20.12), Aimee Keefe (20.13), Annabelle Coxon (21.58) and Karen Wood (22.46). Mike Raynes then ran 19.30 at the Leeds 5k on June 23rd.
Charlotte Mason won the Eccup 10 miles race in a time of 60.58 with Diane Zbadynski also running 114.39 in the same race.
