Weekly round up – w/e 11th February

Indoor track and field

The club had 11 athletes in the England Athletics Junior Indoor Championships at Sheffield, which has a qualifying standard to get into it. There was a silver medal for Rowan Whittaker in the 400m, and bronze for Will Reid in the long jump.

Rowan is in his first year at 400m (having run 300m as Under 15) and produced two very well judged races in heat and final. His 49.57 in the final improved his club record from last week by nearly a second. And is about 40th on UK All Time List. Will jumped 6.89m, his second best ever jump.

In the Under 15 hurdles Juliette Callau qualified for the final, from a big entry, and she also has only just moved up to this event. Her 9.25 is the fastest by a Yorkshire Year 8 since records began in 2006, and the fastest in UK this winter by a Year 8.

Cole McAndrew won his heat of the 800m and but was unable to run the Final through injury.

Ben Foulger finished a fine 5th in the Triple Jump with 13.14m. a PB, club indoor record, and club 2nd ranked including outdoor.

Sophie Robertson-Dover ran a pb and club indoor record of 2m 14.87 in the Under 17 800m, 5th fastest time in the heats but did not qualify for Final. It would have got 4th in the Final.

Others representing us in this very high standard event, well done to all for entering and gained a great experience. Alice Gilday, hurdles 8.61, 15th overall, Lottie Langan, 6th in Under 20 1500 in 4m 45, Rosie Hickling, hurdles, 9.30 – a good comeback in her first race since last June, through injury, Ryan Mosey, 400m, 53.21, 11th overall and Zoe Bind, 10.36 in triple jump.

Road Running

Angus McMillan continued his assault on the club record book as he took more than half a minute off his 5k road race club record as he ran 13.57 in Thursday night’s Armagh 5k in Northern Ireland. This time is only 1 second outside the 5000m outdoor club track record that Angus also holds.  James Tucker ran 14.47 and Tommy Shaw 15.03 in what was a fiercely contested race.

Eight juniors took part in Friday night’s opening race of the York University 5k series. Isaac Stabler led them home in his first ever 5k road race in a time of 15.49. William Hardy missed his PB by just two seconds with 16.21. Samuel Dickinson took over a minute off his PB with 16.41 with James Bastow taking 44 seconds off his PB with 18.17. Hannah Lovett (19.58), Imogen Brown (20.30), Nick Lovett (21.03), Carys Briggs (22.12) and Ava Carter (23.32) also ran.

Dave Lancaster ran 44.24 to be first vet 65 in the Nick Beer 10k that takes place in Llandudno.

16 of our members did parkrun over the weekend. Allan Scott had his first ever win at parkrun at Heslington in 18.35. Lydia Scott nearly made a family double win as she came 2nd in 20.39. Isabel Madden came 1st at Selby in 19.57. There was a junior age group win for Josh Reid and a veteran one for Steve Wright. Brodie Barrow was 1st at the York junior parkrun in 8.27.
