Track and Field
Sunday 28th April saw the opening fixture of the season for the YDL Upper squad. Despite horrendous weather conditions our young athletes performed remarkably well scoring 622 points and winning this YDL Upper fixture by over 270 points.
Match Results
1st City of York 622 points
2nd Gateshead 351 points
3rd City of Sheffield & Dearne 328 points
4th Kingston upon Hull 274 points
5th Kingdom 190 points
There were many good performances and a number of personal bests recorded throughout the day for CoYAC athletes and I’m sure a huge number of our athletes will be rightly proud of themselves for their achievements. Some competed for the Upper team for the first time, some have edged closer to English Schools qualification, but all deserve the utmost praise for the way they act and compete at every match.
The next fixture is away at Doncaster on Sunday 26th May. The 3000m will replace the 1500m at this event but all other disciplines will remain the same. If you are keen to try something different, please have a go in your training sessions. Our success in the National Finals will depend on filling our team-sheet so the next YDL match at Doncaster might be the opportunity to try something new/different. 😊
Before the next YDL fixture, many athletes will be going to the County Championships on 11th/12th May. We also have a senior league match at York on Saturday 18th May and all U17 athletes and older can take part in these matches. Can I also take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers behind the scenes at our club who make it such a well-organised and welcoming venue. We are very lucky to have a great facility, but it is the volunteers who make it the thriving club it is today. So, thank you to everyone whether you made the officials lunches, took photographs, set-out the equipment, dug the sandpits, moved the hurdles, made the hot drinks, compiled the results and countless other jobs which go on throughout the day and enable our young people to compete and excel. It is also important to recognise the contribution of the club coaches who work with the athletes every week and help them on their path to becoming better athletes and even better young people. As team manager, I just slot their names onto the teamsheet but the work that goes on behind the scenes to get these young people physically and mentally ready to compete is wonderful to see.
Road Running
The first race in the York 10k road race league took place in ideal cool running conditions at Tadcaster last Tuesday.
Charlotte Grieve (Mason) was again the star turn from the club as she won the women’s race by 3 minutes with a speedy time of 35.22. Karen Wood was first vet 55 with Steve Wright, Dave Lancaster and Jon Blake being 2nd to 4th in the vet 60 age group. It was also good to see Joe Brown and Rachel Bruford running for the club for the first time.
James Tucker ran 14.58 to come 28th in the Mid Cheshire 5k that was held on Friday night. 2nd claim member Jodi Bemand also ran 18.20 in this race. Miles Watson came 6th in Wednesday night’s Leeds University 5k.
Parkrun
18 members of the club did parkrun over the weekend. There were junior age group wins for Wilson Moisey-Smith, Bethany Ellerker and Brodie Barrow with Steve Wright, Julie Mastrolonardo and Jon Blake getting veteran age group wins. Ted Elwell (7.58) and Jaxon Marshall (8.00) were the first two runners across the line in the York Junior parkrun.
