Northern Athletics Young Athletes 5k Championships

Redcar Sun 30th March:

A number of our young athletes competed on the coast in the 5k Championships. There were some outstanding performances in breezy conditions. The course was an out and back one on the coastal road with the return 2.5km being all into the northerly wind with lots of athletes finding the race challenging. That said our U15 girls managed to win the Team Gold. Hannah Lovett 8th in 19.59, Lucy Davey 10th in 20.08 and Beatrice Thompson 17th in 21.37 completed the team. Our two u15 boys James Bastow and Oscar Walker battled the elements and ran 17.48 [9th] and 18.11[14th] respectively. Our U17 boys were represented by Louis Richardson who came 20th in 16.51 and Cole McAndrew, stepping up from preferred 800m to finish 24rd in 17.02.

Seven of the club’s veteran road runners went to Rufforth airfield to do the Vale of York 5 miles race with Joe Brown stepping up to do the 10 miles race. As at Redcar the windy conditions presented a challenge to the runners. Jack Ford led the club home in the 5 miles race as he came 6th in 29.26. Allan Scott was 9th overall and 2nd vet 45 in 30.29. Mike Raynes (35.05) edged out John Lewis (35.23) as they were 2nd and 3rd vet 50s. Rachael Bruford (39.07) was 4th Vet 40 with Dave Paver made a welcome appearance in a road race rather than his many other roles in the sport as he ran 48.12. Joe Brown ran 1.21.50 in the 10 miles race.

Dave Lancaster was 2nd vet 65 in the Coniston 14 miles race on Saturday.

There was another good turnout at parkrun over the weekend with 19 members completing one. The Browns dominated at Dalby Forest as Imogen came 1st in 20.41, Harriet 2nd in 21.32 with Sebastian being 1st under 11. Isabel Madden came 2nd at Selby in 20.51. There were veteran age group wins for Jon Blake, Steve Wright and Stephen Dring with junior ones for Noah Stipetic and Josh Reid. Noah Stipetic then came 1st in the York Junior Parkrun on Sunday.
