Weekly Round up – w/e 15th January

It was a busy weekend for the club as our members took part in indoor track and field, cross country and road races.

Track and Field

The Northern Indoor senior, under 20 and under 17 Championships at Sheffield brought a change from the cold and wet, and saw a huge jump of 5.87 by Emily Maude, a distance which would have got 2nd in last year’s English Schools and ranked 4th over the whole year. Our other Northern Champions were Chelsea Walker in the hurdles and Cole McAndrew in the 1500m (he also did the 200m, an unusual double). There were silver medals for Kathryn Clague (shot), Isaac Henson (Pole Vault).

We had a lot entered, good to see them taking advantage of the opportunity. For some newer members it was their first indoor competition, and a useful opportunity for hurdlers who have moved to a new age group and spacing.

Off Track Distance Races

The club had 58 runners in the North Yorkshire Schools Cross Country at Skipton. This was a tough, muddy and hilly course. Many had been working hard on these conditions in recent months, and did get the benefit.

There were wins for Ollie Wright, Lottie Langan, Aimee Keefe. 2nd places for Daniel Campbell, Luca Mastrolonardo, Hannah Lovett and 3rd places Isobel Madden, Lucy Gaskin. In the Junior Girls (Year 8 and 9) we had 6 of the first 8.

Daniel Campbell, Daniel Kennedy, Isaac Stabler, William Keens, Luca Mastrolonardo, Charlie Wright, Aimee Keefe, Isobel Madden, Kate Setchell, Nina Hopkins, Lottie Langan, Amy Kennsdy, Lucy Gaskin qualified directly for the English Schools. And 29 club members qualified for the North Yorkshire team for the North East Inter County match.

But there were many who didn’t make the county qualifying places who did have very good runs for their standard / experience, and a number of ours had their “best race ever”

Charlotte Mason came 3rd in the Brass Monkey Half Marathon that starts and finishes at the York Racecourse. Charlotte took 70 seconds off her own club record to run 77.00, not far behind Sunderland’s international marathon runner Ally Dixon, who came 2nd. Josh Breen took 5 minutes off his PB as he ran 79.19. Other runners from the club who ran were Tim Pattinson (88.00), Nick Elliott (93.43), Wesley Possible (94.40), James Belch (95.27), Alex Boynton (95.22), Peter Hanson (97.20) and Hannah Slevin (113.13).

Despite all the other events taking place on the weekend the club still had 13 runners doing parkrun. Alana Reveley came 1st at Selby in 23.11 whilst the fastest male parkrunner from the club was Mike Raynes with 19.44 at Victoria Dock in London.
