Weekly Round up – w/e 23rd July

Track and Field

Alex Botterill had a superb run, shown on BBC1, to finish 3rd in the 800m at the London Diamond League in the Olympic Stadium with 50000 spectators. Wearing his City of York vest. It was an All-British race to help athletes get the World Championships qualifying standard. Alex ran a pb, club record by 0.79 seconds, and 25th fastest Britain of all time in this distance. 1m 44.75.

In the same meeting, Scott Lincoln competed against the new World record holder and the other 2 leading world athletes.

In the England Athletics Championships at Chelmsford, Ollie Wright finished 4th in the javelin, and Chelsea Walker finished 6th in the 400 hurdles then a couple of hours later 6th in the 100 hurdles.

On Saturday the club younger team has much worse weather than seen in the Diamond League on television. But were very positive and determined and gave many good performances to win their YDL match for the 4th time this summer, by about 160 points, to take their place in the National Final. They included 5 wins and 1 second in the 6 relays. And with all teams affected by holidays, the number and standard of athletes “brought in” and the multi events offered by many athletes still produced a very good team to make this our biggest win.

Road and Trail Racing

In Tuesday’s Golden Acre Park Relays Nina Hopkins, Emily Rycroft and Juliet Horne combined to win the Junior Girls category with Will Hardy, Sam Dickinson and Miles Watson coming 2nd in the Junior Boys category. In the junior race, Hannah Lovett, Leo Forsdyke and James Bastow were the first team in the ‘older mixed’ category.

Dave Lancaster was the first vet 65 in Wednesday night’s Nostell Priory 10k with 43.05.

Alan Brown was the fastest of 4 runners from the club in a time of 38.18 in the 10k handicap race which closed out the York 10k Road Race League. Other members of the club were marshalling the event as the club took its turn in staging a race in the series.

The club had 18 runners doing parkrun on Saturday. Gianluca Mastrolonardo won at Heslington in a speedy 15.42 with mum Julie coming 2nd in 21.17. Over in Washington in USA Allan and Lydia Scott both came 3rd in 20.16 and 24.32 respectively. In Sunday’s York Junior parkrun Hannah Lovett came 1st girl in 7.41 with Josh Reid being 2nd boy in 8.31.
