Indoor Track and Field
20 athletes entered the England Indoor Age Group Championships at Sheffield. The highest standard indoor event of the winter, with qualifying standard to get in. For some, to have got the Entry Standard was a great achievement. And great that all were prepared to put themselves against the top juniors in the Country.
Ben Foulger won the triple jump, with an outstanding jump of 14m 26 – only 3 British boys beat that all year in 2024. He also finished 6th in the Long Jump. Other finalists, from big entries, many events needed semi finals, were Adam Pearson 5th in the 200m, Carys Francis 7th in the shot, Emily Maude 8th in the long jump, Juliette Macquin-Jones 6th in the long jump, Rosie Hickling 5th in the hurdles, Sophie Robertson-Dover 6th in the 800m, Zoe Bind 6th in the Triple Jump.
Cross Country Racing
The UK Cross Challenge visited Leeds for the first time on Saturday with a hilly course at Temple Newsam. The meeting also contained a home nations international and an inter area match. Katy Wood and Lottie Langan were both picked to run for the North of England with Katy coming 12th in the senior women’s race and Lottie 11th in the under 20 race. There was another superb run from Beth Lewis as she came 2nd in the under 15 girl’s race. Simon Bolland-Cage and Mark Bolland-Cage ran in the UK Cross Challenge for the first time as they came 41st and 48th in the senior men’s race.
25 club athletes represented North Yorkshire Schools in the North East Inter County match at Middlesbrough. With 5 Counties involved, they were good competitive races with between 60 and 80 runners in a race, on a good fast parkland course. For some this was their first time in a County team,
Our highest placed athlete was Hannah Lovett in 8th, an excellent run. There were top 20 placings for Oscar Walker 15th and first North Yorkshire, Daniel Campbell 13th, Louis Richardson 18th, Beau Jamieson Wannell 12th, Harriet Bown 14th, Marianne Lowson 15th, Rosie Davis 18th, Aimee Keefe 13th.
On Sunday, 20 juniors ran in the PECO League at Roundhay Park. Venue for a number of National Cross Country Championships in the past, and one of the best courses. This was very hilly and testing, with a long steady uphill finish.
There were 210 in the Primary Age race, with a dowhill start, steep hill in the middle, and uphill finish. There were excellent runs for Harper Newcombe to be first girl (her first ever win), Scarlet Bycroft 2nd girl and very close, and Leonardo Matusiak in 8th place and between them.
The secondary age race had 130 runners, over 2 miles of this hilly course. We had 5 boys in the top 20 with James Bastow 4th. Ewan Robertson 5th, Oscar Walker 8th, Wilson Moisey Smith 13th and George Ghosh 17th. Hannah Lovett had a second excellent run of the weekend to be second girl and 18th overall. Lucy Davey had a strong run to be 5th girl, and Carys Briggs 11th. All ours did judge it very well and pushed themselves.
