Track and Field
A small group went to the Hull Open, with the javelin throwers making big breakthroughs.Oliver Wright threw over 60m for the first time, and Maya Lindridge took her best from 32m up to 35.54m. Joe Edwards tackled (and survived, they are high!) the 110 hurdles for the first time, as well as a good opener of 1.66m in the high jump.Kate Setchell and Juliette Horne had their first races at 1500m, finishing 2nd and 3rd with good times for a first attempt. Those who went to Wakefield Open had worse conditions. Quite cold and sprints and long jump in to the wind. But good competitive experience and confidence-boosting medals for the youngsters. It was noticeable that ours were very determined / focused despite the conditions. And that sprinters had the strength and fitness to keep their form though to the line despite the wind and were consistently winning the “tight finishes”. Particularly impressive was Emily Maude with 12.0 for the 80 hurdles. Her first race at this spacing. An English Schools Entry Standard at her first try and into the wind. Followed by a win in the 200 in a decent time in the worst of the conditions.Good wins for Emma Hutton in the 100 and 200, and Eva Murray in the 200 to follow her 3rd in a very competitive 100m. And Floella Thompson another “tight finish” win in the 100.Two of the Year 6 / first year Under 13 had their first Under 13 competition, a big step up in competitiveness. Sophia Horsfall-Samb won one of each medal in the hurdles, shot, 100m, and Gabriel Thompson (who is small for Year 6!) faced the tallest Year 7 imaginable but kept his style and concentration for second in both sprints. Also sprinting well in the conditions Grace Gannon, Adam Pearson, James Palmer, Isaac Henson. Not a good day for times, but a useful competitive run out and a lot of strength evident.
