Weekly round up – w/e 26th June

Track and Field

Scott Lincoln successfully defended his national shot putt title at Manchester yesterday. Scott dominated the event with a winning throw of 20.40m. At the same championships, Lucy Hadaway came 3rd in the long jump with a best jump of 6.45m. Alex Botterill, in only his 2nd competition of the season, came 7th in the 800m in a time of 1.51.41. Chelsea Walker came 3rd in her heat of the 400m hurdles in a time of 59.91.

The 3rd meeting of the YDL Upper League took place in Wakefield on Sunday. Results: 1st City of York AC 494 points, 2nd Kingdom Athletic 429 points, 3rd City of Sheffield & Dearne AC 283 points, 4th Leeds City 248 points, 5th Gateshead Harriers 237 points.

York took a weakened team to Wakefield largely due to DofE expeditions and a fixture clash with the ESAA Combined Events competition at Doncaster. Despite feeling that we were performing well on the day, we were repeatedly told that we were in second place. However, the results show that we did in fact win this third competition and having won the previous two, we now sit at the top of the league table with maximum points. Kingdom Athletic have finished in second place and Sheffield and Dearne finished third. These 3 teams will be joined by Sale Harriers, Preston Harriers and Trafford AC to compose the 6-team play-off match on Sunday August 7th. The top two teams in this play-off match will reach the National Finals on Sunday 4th September.

Congratulations to all the athletes who took part and a big thank you to Parents, Grandparents and Officials for their support throughout the day.

The conditions on the day were quite difficult with some blustery wind to contend with. This made top performances and PB’s very difficult to come by.

Top performances on the day from:

Adam Pearson in the 200m with a time of 23.78 seconds. Takuma Sanderson who won all three of his events – Triple Jump, Long jump and 100m Hurdles; and Lucas Stabler who dominated his 800m and 3000m races, ran a brilliant leg of the 4 x 400m and did it all with a huge smile on his face.

The play-off match is at York on Sunday 7th August.

Off Track Distance Races

The 5th race in the York 10k Road Race League took place last Tuesday at Bugthorpe near Stamford Bridge on a warm evening. The course was a new one to the League with a testing climb in the 2nd mile followed by a long and mostly downhill 3rd and 4th miles. The course was an easier version of the nearby Bishop Wilton course which can no longer be used.

Charlotte Mason came 2nd in the women’s race to Knavesmire’s Becky Penty in a time of 37.11. Charlotte is now assured a share of the overall League title but must beat Knavesmire’s Helen Cross in the last race to win the title outright. Chrissie Dover (11th in 43.21), Karen Wood (19th in 47.13) and Anna Cuthbertson (47th in 52.19) ensured that the women’s team came 4th on the night.

Nearly all our leading senior men were missing as the team came 6th but this did mean that some of the club’s lesser lights were able to count in the team. Alex Dickinson led the club home in 6th with 35.53. Good packing from our last 5 runners in the team so some good head to head battles as Josh Breen (42nd in 40.41), Ed Mezzetti (53rd in 41.33), Mike Raynes (54th in 41.38), Allan Scott (57th in 41.58) and Nick Elliott (60th in 42.07) made up the team.

Dave Lancaster was first vet 60 and Karen Wood 2nd vet 45 in the veteran races.

The final race in the series is at Wistow on Tuesday 5th July.

Steve Asquith came 2nd overall and first vet 40 in the latest race in the Yorkshire Veterans Grand Prix series that took place at Middleston Park in Leeds last Wednesday.

Dave Lancaster was first vet 65 in the Eccup 10 on the north side of Leeds in a time of 1.11.39. Hannah Lovett was 2nd female runner in the junior race in a time of 6.35 just 4 seconds behind the winner Isla Butterworth of Valley Striders.

The club had 17 runners doing parkrun at the weekend. Mark Cage came 1st at Dewsbury in 17.13 with Steve Asquith for once missing out on the win at Heslington as he came 2nd in 17.28. The fastest female parkrunner of the week was Lydia Scott who ran 22.45 at Heslington to come 5th. Bethany Ellerker was 3rd in the York junior 2k parkrun in 9.27 the day after she ran the Selby 5k parkrun.
